Sometimes ago, the waterfall method of programming was used in most programming offices. It involved several steps which could be grouped into: requirements definition, designing, coding and testing. Usually, it took years to make a product ready for the demonstration phase. For a long time, programmers were trapped in this methodology until someone re-introduced the iterative concept in programming. As a result, the waterfall method was soon replaced by structured approach of programming. Now the trend is pointing in the direction of agile programming.
